VDOT Accuracy Scoring

Our Goal With This Feature

A. Prevent overtraining at all costs
B. Train more effectively by becoming a more disciplined and consistent runner

Changing a runner’s focus to accuracy of training, versus training hard, reduces risk of overtraining and leads to more consistent and effective training. If an athlete’s focus is on proper pacing they’re more likely to get the max benefit out of every workout physiologically.

When you train using V.O2 you’re leveraging decades of scientific data which is all wrapped up into your VDOT score. Every workout must have a purpose and very clear communication when it comes to speed and duration of work and recovery. Your score sets your individualized training paces to help you unlock the benefits of that particular workout (e.g speed, endurance, VO2max, etc). The key to improving fitness at a lower risk of injury is accuracy of training.

How The GPS Analyzer Works

When an athlete’s GPS imports to V.O2 we analyze your splits to compare planned versus actual. The app now automatically detects and logs your splits into Log Reps text fields to make it easier for athletes and coaches to review the workout data.

Our algorithm can detect when you’re warming-up, running an interval, recovering and cooling down (unless of course you change the workout and sync the GPS data without updating the session on your calendar beforehand).

Please note: the GPS analyzer is simply looking to detect what you did compared to what was planned. If you had 2mi or 3km scheduled as your warm-up and you end up running shorter than planned and begin your first interval this may throw off the detection and lead to inaccurate splits in the Log Reps fields. You can always manually override and Save to update the scoring. Also, keep in mind, the analyzer is not adjusting for weather or other factors, it’s simply detecting what was planned versus actual data.

Finally, if you don’t connect your GPS device to V.O2 you can still manually log your splits in the Log Reps fields to generate an accuracy score for your workout.

How The Accuracy Scoring Is Calculated

  • Your overall accuracy percentage is calculated by weighing your Pacing score more than your Distance score.
  • When calculating your distance score warm-up, recovery between and cool-downs are not weighed as much as sets within the session.
  • When calculating Pacing scores…
    • On Easy runs each mile or km split is scored individually, not based on overall average pace for the run.
    • On Easy runs running faster than your VDOT pace range hurts your accuracy score more than running slow than the range.
    • On Quality Sessions each rep is scored individually compared to the prescribed pace.
    • On Quality Sessions with a mix of Easy running and sets at various intensities, the higher intensity work is weighted more than Easy pace running to calculate the overall pacing accuracy score for the workout.
